Vittorito (ANTICACASA VITIVINICOLA - Just through Raiano)
Look out for Pietratonj wines at the Supermarket
The winery was established in the late 1970s by Marcello Zaccagnini, who had previously worked as a farmer in his father’s vineyards, whose fruit was sourced by other winemakers. When the market for those grapes died out, he decided to produce wine himself, with his cousin Concezio as the winemaker, eventually building a successful family business. The value-driven wines are produced with a signature grapevine twig wrap, which has been a key point in its successful brand recognition among consumers. The wines are produced as still reds, whites and that regional Abruzzo rosé specialty, Cerasuolo.
Look out for the signature grapevine twig on the bottles
Interesting history with massive old Oak Barrels combined with the more modern equipment. The Vineyards are small and dotted around Vittorito, so you don’t get to see them BUT you can taste the excellent range of wines and purchase some to take back and sample in your own time (at an excellent price too). Look out for Pietratonj wines in the Supermarket. Hopefully, the large Historic Barrel with Tiled Interior will be open to view again by now after Earthquake Damage in 2009. Note: Pietratonj wines and Zaccagnini can be purchased at the Carrefour Supermarket in Sulmona - Zaccagnini is what we call “Weekend Wine”, being more expensive than the Peietratonj. But both are a nice recommended drink, especially the Reds - Look for “Moltipulciano d’Abruzzo” (Moltepilciano being the grape typical of the Abruzzo Region)
Tasting the Wine and Local products
Agriverde farm is 250 metres above the sea level and has a vineyard and olive groves. Take the A14 Adriatic motorway, Ortona exit and then the Maruccina State Road for 5 Km in the Orsogna direction. At Villa Caldari follow signs for Agriverde.
To find it, go through Raiano towards Corfinio and then go Left at the first turning towards Vittorito which is not very far. As you go into the town, look for Via San Sebastiano, 38 on your Right and you will find the Cellars about half way up on the Left Hand Side.
Cantina Aperta (Cellar Open) If you are in Abruzzo during August, look out for “Cantina Aperto” in and around local villages - local producers may open Pop-Up wine cellars/bars for you to taste and Buy their produce. When you get a few in the same village it is good fun doing the rounds! Check with Tourist Information before you go.
Margiotta Winery (Pratola Peligna) Being a small Winery, it wasn’t open on the day we rang, so we need to try again sometime being quite close to us. We found it on our Right, just down from the Aquagarden outdoor pool between Corfinio and the Autostrada. Via Corfiniense, Snc, 67035 Pratola Peligna Italy This is what it says on Trip Advisor: We are a family-owned winery with over a century of history in winemaking and deep roots in the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo's hills, the green hearth in the center of Italy. I'm Francesca from the fifth generation and I will be happy to warmly welcome you and guide you through our history and products which are all made from traditional Abruzzo's grapes. Reservation is recommended, see you soon!
