Activities - Skiing around Secinaro
General Notes: There are excellent ski resorts located within comfortable driving distance of Secinaro but try to get there by about 9.00am to avoid queuing up for equipment! BUT you may want to have your first lesson(s) or brush up on your skills in England before you go. Skiing Practice (Before You Go) Can’t Ski/Won’t Ski? .... OK but at least try the Ski Lift OR Sledging (It's GREAT fun!) The best skiing is from JANUARY to APRIL with Roccaraso being the premier Ski Resort but NOT the nearest to Secinaro and probably not best for begginers ... we found Campo Felice excellent for beginners, especially approached from the Secinaro side of the mountain. Hiring Your Equipment: Size8 Shoe=41 .... Get Size 42 Ski Boots; Ski Length=160 (Up to your nose); Weight 12st=70kg (Settanta)
Campo Felice .... Allow 50-60minutes from Secinaro (30km) Directions: Leaving the Piazza in Secinaro, turn Right at the Junction towards Rocca Di Mezzo - go over the Mountain road the Right at the final ‘T’ Junction to go through Rocca Di Mezzo - then you will soon see the sign to Rocca Di Cambio and the Si Centre “Campo Felice” on your Left .... There is a good Car Park and Parking on one side of the road leading up to it BUT beware, we were fined for parking on the wrong side which was not obvious with the signs and the snow etc! Excellent Skiing for beginners, especially approached from the Secinaro side of the mountain, as the Italians from Rome would be entering from the other side of the mountain. Good Blue Run for beginners and we found an excellent "English Speaking" guide at the Scuola Sci L’Aquila hut. Good skiing, cafe, toilets etc Click Here for Campo-Felice Web Site Note: When there was only just enough snow for skiing, in January one year, it is worth noting that Campo Felice had just enough snow and was open, whereas Ovindoli was NOT.
Ovindoli .... Allow 50-60minutes from Secinaro (30km) Directions: Leaving the piazza in Secinaro, turn Right at the Junction towards Rocca Di Mezzo - go over the Mountain road the Right at the final ‘T’ Junction then turn Left to go through Rovere and on to the large roundabout before Ovindoli town - turn Right - Right again - wind your way up to the Ski Resort which has excellent parking and also parking on one side of the road on the way out! Note: If the snow is too bad on the road from Secinaro to Ovindoli, then you can access the ski resort by going through Raiano, on the Motorway towards Celano! An attractive town in the Apennines below theMonte Magnola summit offering extensive skiing for all abilities to 2223m. Lower down the pistes run between the trees and have extensive snowmaking, but the top third of the ski area is above the tree-line and contains off-piste possibilities in 3 wide bowls. Good skiing, cafe, toilets etcSki Lift/Escalator AND if you don't fancy skiing, you could hire yourself a little sledge and have some fun with the babies! Ovindoli itself is an attractive town in the Apennines below the Magnolo summit offering extensive skiing for all abilities .... BUT it is a sad place when the ice melts end of April to beginning of May!BUT you can always have a Walk/Picnic at Rovere down the road - or visit the Grotto Di Stiffe caves. The village makes a great starting point for hikes and rides into Velino- Sirente Regional Park, a haven apparently for Royal eagles, Marsican bears and Appennine wolves. Roccaraso .... Allow 70-80 minutes from Secinaro (60km) Roccaraso is the first ski resort of Abruzzo. What can be a dim place without snow is transformed into a satisfying ski experience during the high season. You will find everything you need on hire and there excellent slopes and cross-country circuits. If you ring 0039 0854482301 they will send you a brochure.
