Popoli (20-30mins walk).
Popoli pedestianised area
with icecream shop
A visit to Popoli can include the town and its’ Churches,
Cafes and Icecream; Take a walk up to the old Castle which
looks down on the town OR a visit to the Country Park on the
other side of the main road through Popoli to see and watch
the source of the river bubbling up from the ground!
From the Country Park side you
can get a wonderful Photo View
of the Castle on the opposite
side.
If you do the walk up to the
Castle, you can take in the
14 Stations of the Cross as you
make your way up, which many
Christians would do over the
Easter period, or just enjoy the
sculptures.

often you see that!
The castle was built in the XI century and throughout the
centuries it was a valuable fortress thanks to its location, lying
just at the mouth of the Gorge of Popoli. Today you can visit the
ruins of the castle, just a 30-40mins walk up from the town.
The Gran Caffe
Places to eat
As you walk through the town you will
come across a Cafe on your left with
eating space outside (not tried it yet but
looks nice) and on your right, opposite the
park, you have the Gran Caffe with a
covered outside area.
The Gran Caffe is recommended and
catered for Sandra’s Gluten Free diet.
Good food, good service and customer
toilets.

Toilets (Smiles all round!)
Walking on from the Gran Caffe, if you go to the end and then turn Right, you will come across
a small square with a Fountain and our first Church which is normally open to have a look
around.
La Chiesa di San Francesco
(La Chiesa = The Church)
Inside the Church
If you walk across and up the steep street, you will come across our second Church which has
been closed for some time following the earthquake of 2009. We were so lucky to see them
carrying the Religious Statue from the previous day’s procession, up the hill from La Chiesa di
San Francesco to the second Church for storage. As we were taking photographs they kindly let
us in to watch them and view the Church.

On the opposite side to the Town and the Castle, there is a Country Park/Nature Reserve which
should NOT be missed! If you drive past the front of the cement works and over a bridge you
will see a sign to it on your right. Drive to the end and you will see the car park on the left.
If you are fit and able, you can leave the car there and walk into town or just visit the Nature
Reserve which has Car Parking, Cafe, Toilets and a small Visitor Centre.
Good place for a picnic with public toilets, cafe
and a small information centre
Take a walk around or up the hill to the
viewing platform to see the Castle
Here you can view the Source of the river
bubbling up from the ground - not often you
see that!
View of the Castle across from the Nature
Reserve
The area is great for a leisurly cycle ride, taking in the Nature Reserve and then riding across
into Town for an icecream or a Cake/Coffee in one of the cafes.
Festival dei Popoli (August) .... Trout & Shrimp Festival
The work that the towns people put in to this festival is amazing, everybody is dressed up from
90 year old men and women to 2 year old boys and girls, and the castle above the town gives
it that extra something.
