Days Out from Secinaro - Celano (Castle & the Celano Gorge)
35.4km/24miles (43mins)
Start=Secinaro Piazza: Depart Secinaro on Local Road, head for the Autostrada at Raiano and head towards Rome until you see the Celano turn off.
A drive to Celano Castle is well worth while - take a look round and have an ice-cream. Celano has no less than seven medieval churches, along with its own well-preserved 14th-century castle, but its most spectacular attraction is the Gole di Celano, a 2000-foot-deep gorge. A well-marked track follows the entire length of the chasm at its base, where it often narrows to little more than a person's outstretched arms. Take this walk before the end of September, when rains may make it impassable.
OK on a rainy day
Then, find your way to the start of the Gorge, which is not easy to find but is amazing when you find it! …. Drive through the town and bear Right down the hill - turn Left at the bottom and look for a little track off on your Left as you go Right round a bend - if you see the big Hotel on your Right then you have gone too far so turn round and try again! Without doing the walk, you can drive your car up an unmade road to a decent car park at the end and enjoy a Picnic by the river and just at the entrance to the Gorge. To walk deeper into the Gorge for three quarter of an hour or so, take the Path to the Left where you should see the start of the Gorge and finally come to an interesting little waterfall and picnic spot …. one of those walks when you think you’ll never get there but keep going!
Path goes off Left
