Days Out from Secinaro - Badia Hermitage & Abbey
30.7km/19.1miles (42mins) …. About 15mins from Sulmona and worth a visit
Start=Secinaro Piazza: Depart Secinaro on Local Road, go through Raiano then turn Right rather than going towards the Autostrada then second exit at the roundabout to go past the Carre Foure Supermarket. Don’t take the sign off Right to Sulmona, just carry straight on until you see sign to Badia on your Left.
Santo Spirito Al Morrone Abbey
Ask for an English Speaking Guide
The Abbey of the Holy Spirit at Morrone, is a former monastery about five kilometers outside of the town of Sulmona, at the base of Monte Morrone, in the Province of L'Aquila, region of Abruzzo. You may be lucky to find it open during August but you need to check maybe at the Tourist Information in Sulmona. Well worth a walk/picnic at the top even if it is closed.
As you get to the small commune of Badia, you will find the Abbey at the bottom of the hill with its’ large wooden doors open to the public. Just go in and ask for an English Speaking guide (you may be lucky if she’s in) or <Click Here> to book ahead. The Hermitage can be seen from all over Sulmona clinging to the mountain side. You can get the car a bit closer up the hill before taking the walk up to the top! (Good path but a slow, not to easy walk)

Learn about the reluctant Italian Pope!
The Hermitage, clinging to the sides of Monte Morrone, was the bolt-hole of our reluctant Pope. If you are fit to walk up it is well worth a visit, especially if you have your picnic at the top.
