Walking …. A Walk In The Car
Sometimes it is appropriate to drive to the start of an easy walk, take a stroll and come back to the car - especially if you
have visitor(s) who can’t manage as much as you. Walk times are no more than 5-10mins away from the car to a site of
geological interest or natural beauty.
Croce Di San Marco
Looking down on the Village
Walk JS1: “Secinaro Cross1” (Croce Di San Marco)
Difficulty T/E (2hrs) Start=Secinaro Piazza
This is the large Cross (no longer illuminated) which you can see on approaching the village. You
can walk up but you can, in fact, drive right up to it in the car …. Leave the village and go Right
towards Chalet Sirente/Rocca Di Mezzo. At the top of the hill turn Right to go to the Small Church.
As you go past the parking spots go right and then a sharp left up a small/narrow/steep road and
just keep going UP towards the cross. Then enjoy the view or have a picnic/flask of tea.
Start=Secinaro Piazza
On leaving the Piazza, drive out of the village and turn Right towards Rocca Di
Mezzo - up to the Chalet Sirente - Carry on a few miles until you see the Crater on
your Left - park the car and walk across to the Crater.
Don’t worry too much about the Cows with Bells around their necks (so they can’t
sneak up on you!).
You may see people picking Mushrooms in the field around the Crater but it is not
recommended that you try - they know what they are doing!
It was 390 steps around the Crater so, if you are good at Mathematics, you should
be able to work out its’ Diameter?
Castel Di Ieri - Temple & Old Church
Start=Castel Di Ieri
Coming down the hill from Secinaro, as you reach the T-Junction, turn right towards Goriano Sicoli. You will soon see the
Archeological Site for the Temple on your Left .... may be open in August but, if not, you can look through the fence and
read the information board to get an idea.
When you’ve seen enough, carry on half a mile up the road and turn off to the Old Church signposted on your right.
Park up as the road widens at the top of the road and walk off to the left up to the old church .... Again, not open to view
but you can look through the gate. (I believe you can phone for an appointment to view???)
