A Bicycle Of Your Own The best option EVER is to get yourself a Folding Bicycle so you can fit two in the back of a Hatchback car without causing much damage. What fun we’ve had once we got the hang of it, especially with the short 1hr rides and then back  to the car! Ours have full sized wheels but it does take two of us to lift them into the boot without causing damage. If you are only doing the short leisure rides, then may be a folding shopping cycle with smaller wheels would be ok? Hiring Bicycles/Mountain Bikes There is a good Cycle Hire Shop in Rocca Di Mezzo just opposite the fountain in the centre. You can hire for one hour or half-day etc and there are designated cycle tracks either side of town. We had to leave our Passport with the guy in the shop but then couldn’t find him when we got back (but that’s another story and, being a small town, you can ask someone where he is!) There is also a Nature Reserve/Visitor Centre just outside Popoli (On the Left, opposite side to the Castle) where you can hire bycicles. At Lago Di Scanno, you can Hire Bycicles of all sort, including the 4-Man Cycle Carts to go around the Lake GREAT FUN! General Tips and Advice Never mind what they do in Italy, get yourself a cycling helmet and WEAR IT! (If you must, bring one with you from England) Secondly, get yourself a Gel Seat and you will be able to laugh at rough roads! BUT don’t forget to take it off if you shelter from the rain, otherwise you may end up with a wet backside like we did! You may have 18 Gears but, if you are like me, you will use 2 or 3 and wonder what all the others are for? In reality, get to know the setting on your bike for a Low Gear to go up hill with and a High Gear for pedalling nice and slowly with when you are on the level. That way, you will not get caught out in the wrong gear or go too far and have your chain come off all together when changing gears! A Cycle Lock is essential so that you can chain your bicycle to a convenient fence/post and go in to appreciate the various attractions - get a nice long/coiled one so you can chain up two bikes AND your Helmets at the same time! Although we have had no problems of theft or vandalism except in the larger places like Rome where you need to be extra cautious! There is no problem riding with a Rucksack on your back - get a small one and take a picnic/water with you.
